I’ve been back in training for about two months now. Everything is going to plan and I’m enjoying every session. It’s great to feel my body adapting week by week and to see improvements. My current assessment of everything up this point: so far, so good. Away from training, I was lucky enough to spend one of my rest days at Sky News this week. I’m very fortunate to have Sky supporting my training and also helping me pursue interests outside of athletics, and that’s what makes the Sports Scholarships scheme so unique. I’ve always been a bit of a news and current affairs geek so seeing everything first hand was like an early Christmas present. A fast-paced newsroom is a nice change of scenery. Training at this time of year is all about being patient and putting together small improvements in preparation for the competition season. It’s a gradual process, which can seem detached from the world away from the confines of the track and the weights room. That’s something I love about winter training but it’s good to have things to break up the long off-season.As I probably won’t be competing before late March, everything I do is geared towards a set of medium to long-term goals. Working on a constantly changing news story with a tight deadline approaching is right at the other end of the spectrum, so I got a real buzz out of being up against the clock in a way that didn’t involve a stopwatch. My day started by meeting one of the Executive Producers in charge of the afternoon show and the rest of the time was spent shadowing the producers tasked with preparing material for the broadcast. In the morning I watched a news package being put together based on a major court sentence – and it ended up being the top story in the afternoon.DeadlineI went through video material sent in from reporters and then sat in on the producer and editor who put together the finished package, bringing the report, video and graphics together as the clock ticked down to the 2 o’clock deadline.Later on I sat in the broadcast gallery in front of what seemed like thousands of buttons and nearly as many video monitors, as the director and executive producer oversaw the live broadcast. It was eye-opening to watch and without doubt one of the most memorable things I’ve done thanks to Sky.Seeing the whole team adapting on the spot to the latest events was really impressive and it was striking to watch the team responding to breaking news and having to prioritise stories, fact check, coordinate with reporters outside the studio and guests across the country, all whilst keeping to a schedule - just a normal day to everyone else but enthralling to watch as an outsider. So overall, things are going well. I was keen to get in to Sky News before Christmas as I’m off to train in Florida for the first few months of next year. 2015 is coming round very quickly which makes me realize a big chunk of winter training is already in the bag.I’m excited and it will be great to get in the warmth to continue the good run of training. There’s plenty to look forward to in the New Year and I’m sure that before I know it, the competition season will be just around the corner. Discount Soccer Jerseys .
